Which level is right for you?
We coach every level — from people who have never touched a board, to surfers who are already riding independently and want to push further. We split our lessons into four clear levels so every session is useful, safe, and actually fun for you. Read through the descriptions below and pick the one that fits. If you're between two, go with the lower one — we reassess on Day 1.

First Timer
THAT'S YOU IF...
• You've never surfed, or had one or two sessions and barely got to your feet.
• You're still working on getting up on the board consistently.
• You surf in the whitewater — the broken, foamy part closest to shore.
• The pop-up feels uncertain or happens too slowly.
WHAT WE FOCUS ON
Pop-up technique, board balance, reading the whitewater, ocean safety basics — and your first steps toward catching real green waves. Includes a Surfskate session to build muscle memory faster.
First Timer
You've never surfed before — or tried it once and are starting fresh.
Whitewater only

Lower Intermediate
THAT'S YOU IF...
• You've surfed a handful of times — maybe on a past holiday or in lessons.
• You can pop up in the whitewater, but green (unbroken) waves are still a challenge.
• You catch the occasional green wave, but mostly ride straight toward the beach.
• Wave selection and timing still feel confusing.
WHAT WE FOCUS ON
Catching green waves independently, angling the takeoff, riding down the line, and learning to read and time waves — the foundation everything else builds on.
Lower Intermediate
You've had a few lessons and can stand up — now learning to actually ride the wave.

Intermediate Lesson

Intermediate
THAT'S YOU IF...
• You catch green waves without being pushed — you paddle in yourself.
• You feel where the wave is going and start to ride along its face.
• You're working on your first turns — even if they're not clean yet.
• Comfortable in knee- to chest-high surf.
WHAT WE FOCUS ON
Bottom turns, cutbacks, generating speed, wave selection, lineup positioning — turning solid basics into real surfing with style and control.
You're surfing green waves on your own — now adding control, turns and confidence.
Green waves + turns
Intermediate

Advanced
THAT'S YOU IF...
• You surf head-high waves comfortably and read the lineup well.
• Turns and cutbacks are part of your regular surfing.
• You paddle out independently and make your own decisions.
• You want targeted coaching, not the fundamentals.
WHAT WE FOCUS ON
Power, flow, top turns, re-entries — and the details that separate good surfing from great surfing. Small groups or 1-on-1, tailored to where you want to go.
Advanced
You surf independently — coaching sharpens what's already there.

Not sure which level is right for you?
That's completely normal — most people land somewhere between two levels. Pick the lower one when in doubt. Our coaches assess everyone on Day 1 and adjust groups if needed. Nobody gets left behind, and nobody gets held back.
The people in the water with you
At Yume, you're not coached by a rotating team of strangers. This summer, your instructors are Cata and Philip — two people who have shaped what Yume is about.
Cata

Surf Instructor · Surf & Bodyboard · Portugal
Local knowledge · Surf & bodyboard · World traveller
Cata grew up near Porto and has spent her life in and around the Portuguese Atlantic. She surfs and bodyboards — two disciplines that give her a feel for the ocean that's hard to put into words, but easy to feel in a lesson.
Between seasons she travels and teaches around the world, returning each time with new perspectives and a deeper understanding of what it means to surf in different conditions and cultures.
She has a rare ability to read exactly where you are — technically and mentally — and tailor her coaching to that moment rather than following a script. Her sessions are individual in the truest sense.
Away from the water, she writes and immerses herself in poetry and philosophy. That part of her shows up in the surf too: she makes you think as much as she makes you surf. You'll leave her sessions with a wave caught and an idea you'll be turning over for days.
Philip

Surf Instructor · Co-founder · Tenerife
Competitive surfer · Physiotherapist · Atlantic specialist
Philip picked up his first board at 10 years old in Tenerife. Growing up on the Canaries, he learned to surf all kinds of conditions — from mellow beach breaks to fast, powerful Atlantic swells. He started competing early and went on to take part in regional, national and international contests.
That competitive background informs how he teaches. He knows what it means to train seriously, to break down technique under pressure, and to progress with intention — not just by spending time in the water.
His work as a physiotherapist and osteopath adds another layer: he understands how bodies move and learn, which means he can spot and correct technical habits before they become ingrained. His sessions are precise without losing the fun.
Our Surflessons
At Yume Surfcamps, you’ll be guided by highly skilled instructors who combine years of surfing expertise, competitive experience, and professional training. All our surf instructors are certified surf coaches and lifeguards who meet the highest legal and safety standards, ensuring you're always in good hands.
Classes are kept small, with a maximum of 6-8 participants per group, depending on the level. This allows our instructors to provide personalized coaching tailored to your needs. Lessons are conducted in English, but as many of our instructors are multilingual, there’s a good chance you can be taught in your native language.
Our instructors carefully assess daily surf conditions to choose the best spot with the ideal waves for your level, creating a safe and supportive learning environment. With their expertise, you’ll develop essential skills while having a lot of fun, whether you're catching your first wave or mastering more advanced techniques.
