What NOT to Bring to a Surf Camp in Portugal
Before the list of what to pack, here is what most guests over-pack — and can happily leave at home:
• Surfboard — provided at camp, free of charge
• Wetsuit — provided at camp, free of charge
• Yoga mat — provided for daily sessions
• Surfskate gear — provided for lessons
• Bed linen — included in all stays
The Complete Packing List: Surf Camp Portugal
Swimwear & Beach Essentials
• 2–3 bikinis or boardshorts — you will be in the water daily, so having spares is useful
• Changing poncho / surf poncho — essential for quick changing at the beach without a cubicle
• Reef-safe, waterproof sunscreen (SPF 50+) — the Atlantic sun is stronger than it looks, especially on the water
• Lip balm with SPF — often forgotten, always needed
• Surf hat or cap — for long sessions in the sun
• Sunglasses with UV protection — bring a backup pair; beaches and sunglasses have a complicated relationship
• Quick-dry microfibre towel — lighter and faster-drying than a standard beach towel
Clothing for Land
Praia de Mira in summer is warm during the day (22–28°C typically) but Atlantic evenings can get cool. Pack for both.
• 4–5 casual T-shirts or tops
• 2 pairs of shorts or light trousers
• 1 light hoodie or zip-up for evenings — essential for the beach wine evenings
• 1 light waterproof jacket — Atlantic weather is occasionally unpredictable
• Comfortable yoga/activewear for the daily morning sessions
• Flip flops — your primary footwear for 90% of the week
• One pair of trainers or light shoes for city trips to Porto or Aveiro
• Underwear and socks for 7 days — washing facilities are limited at camp
Toiletries & Health
• Biodegradable shampoo and shower gel — for environmental reasons; appreciated at any eco-conscious camp
• After-sun lotion — your body will thank you after day three
• Ibuprofen or paracetamol — muscle soreness after surfing is real
• Ear drops or surf ear plugs — regular cold water exposure can cause surfer's ear over time
• Personal medications and prescriptions — pack more than you think you need
• Insect repellent — Atlantic coastal areas can have mosquitoes in the evenings
• Small first aid basics — blister plasters, antiseptic wipes, waterproof plasters for minor cuts
Tech & Documents
• Passport (valid for at least 6 months) and travel documents
• Travel insurance documentation — ensure it covers water sports activities
• Phone and charger — a waterproof case or dry bag for the beach is highly recommended
• Portable power bank — useful for long beach days and Porto excursions
• Cash (euros) — Praia de Mira is a small village; not all local establishments take card
Bag Size: What Works for a Week at Surf Camp
For a one-week stay at Yume Surfcamps, most guests find a 40–50L backpack or a medium-sized holdall is sufficient. Since surfboards, wetsuits, and yoga equipment are all provided at the camp, your bag is purely for clothing, personal items, and toiletries. There is no need to check bulky surf gear.
Yume Surfcamps offers transfer services from Porto Airport (€45 each way) and from Aveiro train station (€30 each way), so you do not need to worry about navigating public transport with heavy luggage.
